This Couple Built Their Dream Home Using Containers

Some people just have a good eye and a natural talent for crafts. The young couple in this story definitely belongs to that category. Richard and Amy are a couple from Melbourne, Australia that managed to build an incredible home using only three shipping containers. The house looks so amazing that anyone would love to live in it.

Amy is actually pregnant and the delivery is only 2 months away so this was one of the reasons why they wanted their own unique place to live in. The land of their house belongs to Amy’s parents, but they are only using 5 acres of the land.

They chose this way as they didn’t want to deal with down payments, long-time mortgage payments, or any loans associated with building the house.

For the containers, joinery, paneling, solar system, and septic tanks they approximately paid $102,500 USD in total. As the steel containers wouldn’t be too comfortable to use as they are, thick insulation was absolutely necessary.

Both the interior and the exterior of the house is covered with designer panels. This hid the containers and also prevented them from rain. The kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms are all in separate containers that are connected by doorways that attach the containers side-by-side.

They are using solar energy for the most part and since they are a family of two, for now, this suffices for them. Since each container has a floating roof, the house remains cool when it’s hot outside. The roofs are also good because they keep solar power in place.

They also have two large storage tanks outside the house to store rainwater. The couple spent lots of effort to use every bit of available space effectively.

They put drawers and racks everywhere to find effective solutions to their storage problems. It can be said that the house has a very modern look.

The couple doesn’t really think about remodeling or renovating their house anytime soon, and instead, they are planning to make changes and upgrades when the necessity arises.
