A Town in Australia Brings Up A Brilliant Idea To Stop The Pollution

Plastic contamination and floating waste in water supplies is a rising global issue. It poses serious risks both for humans and for the wildlife. However, sometimes some easy and simple solutions turn out to be the most effectual ones for problems like these. Kwinana, an Australian city became a globally known city just for this reason.

In March 2018, the state of Kwinana built two drainage areas in Henley Reserve.

In March 2018, the state of Kwinana built two drainage areas in Henley Reserve.

These two drainage nets or in other words “trash traps” were installed to evacuate the plastic waste from drainage systems. Stormwater from the local road network carries pollutant and solid waste from the flow into the nature reserves; that is where the nets initiate and block them. Therefore, the drainage nets were installed right on the outlets of two trash trap pipes, settled in between dwellings zones and natural areas.

The trash traps, including production, installation and the manpower cost the city of Kwinana about $20.000.

This idea of waste management has been proven to be working in a very cost-effective way that the heavy duty of collecting the trash manually dropped to the minimum level. The nets are simple for installation, and a crane comes to pick them up when they’re full.

After the placement of the nets, about 815Ibs (370 kg) of trash were caught during a four months period

The next stop after collection of waste is sorting facilities, there the green waste, recyclable and non-recyclable stuff and plastics are separated and recycled if they can. Local people of the city are very satisfied with this effective project. Besides, the wildlife in the city has a cleaner area to live and the trash traps cause no risk for them.

Carol Adams, the Mayor remarked that the locals in the city were always caring the environmental and global issues. Also, he mentioned that 370 kg of trash would be gathered in the reserves if it was not for this project.

So, officials plan installation of two more trash traps in 2019, as this is the most active and cost-effective solution to reduce the pollution of water. 815 Ibs in just four months, how much would it make over a year?
