The Oldest Tree Ever Was Cut Down in 1964

The oldest tree which had been alive since the times before the Egyptians pyramids were built was cut down in 1964. A bristlecone pine named as Prometheus was located in Nevada. A geography student, Donald Currey who took permission to take a few samples from bristlecone pines in the area found this very old tree which may be more than 4000 years old and cut it.

Although the exact reason why he cut it is not known clearly, he claimed that he could not determine the possible age of the tree by coring. When the rings of the tree after it was cut were counted, it turned out to be nearly 4900 years old making it probably the oldest living three at that time.

There were heavy criticisms against Currey at that time and this unfortunate event took attention for bristlecone pines and Great Basin National Park was founded. Visitors can only see the stump left behind Prometheus now.
