Houses Close to Near Lake Erie Got Covered In Layers Of Ice

The weekend damaged the houses of people on the East Coast, over Lake Erie in New York and destroyed them by the tempest winds and waves reaching 15-foot from the lake which resulted the structures got covered by 1 to 3-inch thick ice. One of the locals, Ed Mis, said to CNN that it looked like a fake, artificial scene and that inside of the house was dark and terrifying. Mis also told that on Thursday his garden didn’t have a single piece of ice, whereas on Friday morning, his and some other neighbours’ yards were covered with ice completely.

A meteorologist at WGRZ-TV, Elyse Smith, said that these ice houses came out of the combination of the lake water washing up on shore, strong winds, below-freezing weather conditions. Smith also said that the gale-force winds and constant snow that storms brought lasted for two more days. Especially for the lake side, Lake Erie was not frozen all over, which was caused a big issue. Because of this, the waves that were 10-to-14 feet (some of them even 18 feet) would wash ashore. Thus, the water of lake constantly crashed the shore and winds gusted up carrying the below freezing temperature and the ice developed over the line of the shore.

Smith added that houses at Hoover Beach would got covered of ice during some periods of each year due to the topography of the place but the ice has never been this extreme and that this might be mainly caused by gusts of wind. As the waves were coming ashore, the ice was growing and the fresh breeze constantly brought excess water in residential area.

The frozen scenery of the neighborhood become popular not only in a local scale but also among tourists. Anyhow, as it is an unstable area, police officers warn visitors to keep themselves away for their safety.

Meanwhile, locals were afraid that when the ice would start to melt, it could damage the roof because of the weight or destroy other parts of their houses. An emergency manager from Hamburg, Sean Crotty, said that structural collapse is a possible risk over these houses, since a gallon of water would weigh around 8 pounds. He also added that the residents have witnessed such kind if situations because of strong winds in the February. As for the last year, he said that they’ve struggled with heavy storms that damaged their houses and private properties.
