Dazzling Red and Black Cinnabar Moths

Meet Cinnabar Moths that break the notion that butterflies are more beautiful than moths. It takes its name from the mineral Cinnabar, which is a mercury ore. This makes it highly toxic.

Moths have broader, more hairy bodies. When they stop, their wings stay straight, unlike butterflies.

We can recognize them from caterpillars with orange and black stripes before transforming into black and red forms.


It is a type of moth native to the British Islands. As with most moth species, it is more active at night. Their main food is yellow-colored wild flowers.
