An Old but New Breath to the Lumber Production: Daisugi

Ancient Japanese people revealed a pruning technique that provides sustainability in the forests during timbering. This method is called “daisugi”. It prunes the trees in a specific way that allows new trees to emerge from the cut ones.

In the footage, you can see a cedar tree that is pruned so heavily that a huge bonsai has been produced out of cedar’s branches. This method yields more solid and thicker wood and allows the trees to be harvested frequently without chopping them down.

A very similar method to Daisugi is being used in the UK under the name of “pollarding”.
